Chiropractic adjustments
Gentle adjustments for stiff, guarded joints in the neck and upper back once your exam clears them.
About chiropractic adjustmentsAfter the crash, get your neck checked.
Neck pain, stiffness or headaches in the days after a car accident, a fall or a hard hit. We check how your neck moves and build your care from there.
The short answer
Whiplash is a neck injury from a fast back-and-forth movement of the head, often in a rear-end car crash, though falls and sports hits cause it too. Symptoms usually start within days. Whiplash care at our Redmond clinic may combine chiropractic adjustments, Chiropractic BioPhysics, trigger point injections and guided rehab.
Whiplash can feel like little at first. A day or two later it may show up as a stiff neck, a headache at the base of the skull or trouble turning to check your mirror.
Your exam checks how your neck moves, where it hurts and whether nerves are involved. Gentle chiropractic adjustments for whiplash are one part of the plan when the exam supports them.
What is going on
Whiplash is a neck injury caused when the head is thrown quickly backward and then forward, like the crack of a whip. The motion can strain the muscles and other soft tissue of the neck. Neck pain and stiffness are the most common signs, and they usually begin within days.
A sudden impact throws the head back and then forward.
Muscles, ligaments and other neck tissue are stretched or strained.
Pain, stiffness and headaches build over the next few days.
If you were in a car accident, have your neck checked by a medical provider even if the pain seems mild.
How far your neck turns and bends is measured at the start, so your provider can track it as the plan goes on.

Book an evaluationWhy it happens
Any force that snaps the head back and forth can cause it.
Rear-end collisions are a common cause. The car is pushed forward, the head snaps back and then forward, and the motion can damage the muscles and tissues of the neck.
A fall from a bike, a horse, a ladder or on ice can jolt the head the same way. Riders and mountain bikers can take this kind of hit on the trail or in the arena.
Football tackles and other sports-related contact hits can cause whiplash. A hard hit from the side or from behind can jolt the head the same way a crash does.
Being punched or shaken can injure the neck in the same way as a crash. Anyone hurt this way should see a medical provider promptly and can ask for help to stay safe.
How we treat it
Whiplash care at our clinic follows an exam of your neck motion, sore spots and nerve signs. A plan can combine chiropractic adjustments, Chiropractic BioPhysics posture work, trigger point injections for tight muscle knots, and guided rehab for neck strength and range.

Whiplash symptoms most often start within days of the injury, so you may feel fine at the scene and stiff the next morning. See a provider if you notice neck pain, stiffness, headaches or tingling after a crash, even a minor one.
Yes, if you have neck pain or any other whiplash symptom. Go to a hospital first for weakness, numbness, a head injury or a neck you cannot move. Once a serious injury is ruled out, our exam focuses on how your neck moves and what is sore.
Yes. Headaches are a common whiplash symptom, most often starting at the base of the skull. They usually come with neck pain and stiffness. A sudden, severe headache or one with confusion or vision changes needs emergency care.
Rest may help for a day or two after the injury, though too much bed rest may slow healing. Keeping the neck still for long periods can weaken its muscles, so stretching and movement exercises are usually part of whiplash care. Your provider shows you which ones to start with.
Either can help you feel better. Put heat or cold on the neck for about 15 minutes every three hours or so, and keep a cloth between the pack and your skin.
Whiplash often gets better within a few weeks, but some people have pain for months or years. Intense first symptoms, such as severe neck pain or pain spreading to the arms, make ongoing pain more likely. A past whiplash, older age, existing neck or low back pain and a high-speed crash are also linked to a worse outcome.
