Sound familiar?

When your back or neck keeps tightening up.

A stiff back or neck can make a long drive, a round of golf or a good night's sleep harder than it should be.

Adjustments are one part of the hands-on chiropractic care we provide in Redmond.

The short answer

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also called spinal manipulation, is a hands-on treatment for a stiff or irritated joint. A Doctor of Chiropractic uses the hands or a small instrument to apply a controlled force to one joint at a time. The goal is to improve how your spine moves and to ease pain.

How it works

  1. On the table

You lie on a padded chiropractic table, often face down.

  2. A controlled force

Your provider places their hands on one joint and applies a quick, controlled force.

  3. The joint settles

The joint moves a little past its usual range, then settles.

Who it may suit

Who should not have it

  • A fresh injury that needs urgent care first
  • Pain that does not start in a stiff or irritated joint
  • Hoping one visit will settle an old problem

If your symptoms have not improved after a few weeks of adjustments, they may not be the right treatment for you.

I've never before had chiropractic care that went beyond just an adjustment. They do the adjustment (very well) and so much more. Everyone cares about your wellbeing and progress.

Questions

The pop, soreness and safety.

Still unsure? Call (541) 923-6024, Monday to Thursday.

What is the popping sound during an adjustment?

It is gas leaving the joint. Gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide collect in small spaces inside a joint, and they release as the joint moves and stretches. It is the same kind of sound you hear when you crack your knuckles, and it does not feel painful.

How many adjustments will I need?

It depends on what is causing your pain and how long it has been there. Mayo Clinic notes that low back pain may take several sessions.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Mayo Clinic calls adjustments safe when they are done by someone trained and licensed to give chiropractic care. Serious problems are rare. They can include pressure on nerves in the lower spine and, after a neck adjustment, a rare type of stroke.

How long does soreness last after an adjustment?

Mild side effects often follow spinal manipulation, most commonly more pain or discomfort, stiffness or a headache. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that most of these side effects go away within 24 hours.

Is an adjustment safe if I have a herniated disc?

An adjustment can make a herniated disc worse in rare cases, so your provider looks at your symptoms and any imaging first.

Can I get adjusted while I am pregnant?

Yes. Prenatal chiropractic care is offered at the clinic. Talk with your prenatal care provider about any treatment, and tell your provider here how far along you are.

Do you adjust kids?

Yes. Chiropractic care for kids uses very gentle methods that differ from adult techniques. It does not replace pediatric medical care, and the clinic coordinates with your child's pediatrician when appropriate.

Should I tell my other health care providers about my adjustments?

Yes. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health advises talking with all your health care providers about any complementary approach you use. That way, you can make shared, well-informed decisions. Tell your provider here about any prescription or over-the-counter medicines and supplements you take, too.
